With almost 115,000 square metres of retail and service sector floor space, low retail property yields and vacancy rates, combined with high levels of footfall and a wide selection of shops, the city of Canterbury has one of the most buoyant economies in Kent.
Canterbury city is ranked within the top 10 per cent of town/shopping centres across the UK. The city's retail catchment area covers East and North Kent and parts of East Sussex, reaching a population of 315,000, with an average household disposable income well above the national average. To support the prosperity of the city, Canterbury City Management is works to stimulate and enhance the city's economy. A public and private partnership formed in 1994 and sponsored by Canterbury City Council, the partnership includes prominent local employers and companies from the retail, tourism and leisure and professional/business services sectors.
Canterbury City Centre Management:
- promotes Canterbury as a quality destination through producing Business/Shopping Guides and facilitating events like the British Food Festival and Canterbury Euromarket;
- acts as an important link between the community, business and the local authorities; and
- encourages a range of transport opportunities for visitors and workforce to enable easy access to the city centre.
